Germany Returns Ethiopia’s Sacred Artefacts After a Century

Africa is rising… and history is finally coming home.
After more than 100 years, Ethiopia has received 12 sacred artefacts that were kept in Germany since the 1920s. Crowns. Shields. Paintings. Living pieces of Ethiopian identity—finally returning to their rightful land.

WHAT HAPPENED

Franz Weiss, Germany’s envoy to Ethiopia originally collected these artefacts in the 1920s.
His son, Professor Ramon Wyss, has now returned them to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University.

The Weiss family says their intention was simple:

“To return the beauty of these items to the Ethiopian people and preserve the culture connected to my father’s birth.”

Germany’s envoy called the handover a symbol of “friendship” between the two nations. Ethiopia’s Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa called it a major milestone in preserving cultural heritage.

These pieces will now be open for public viewing, research, and academic study.

THE BIGGER STORY – Africa’S STOLEN HERITAGE

But this is more than a celebration—it’s part of a much bigger African struggle.

FACT 1: During colonial rule, Europeans stole thousands of African artefacts.
FACT 2: More than 90% of Africa’s cultural treasures are still outside the continent.
FACT 3: France alone holds 90,000+ African artefacts in its museums.
FACT 4: The British Museum has over 12,000 stolen African treasures—most from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan, and Kenya.
FACT 5: Ethiopia’s own Tabots, sacred church tablets, are still hidden in the UK.
FACT 6: The famous Benin Bronzes were looted in 1897—Germany only began returning some in 2022.
FACT 7: Congo had millions of cultural items stolen during Belgian rule.
FACT 8: These artefacts were not just objects—they are spiritual, royal, and historical archives.
FACT 9: When Europe stole artefacts, they stole identity, memory, and power.
FACT 10: Without cultural heritage, Africa was easier to colonize—and easier to psychologically dominate.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR AFRICA

When artefacts return, Africa regains:

  • History
  • Identity
  • Cultural pride
  • Academic knowledge
  • Tourism revenue

This is not just about museums—it’s about reversing centuries of erasure.

Germany returning Ethiopia’s treasures is a step.
But the work is not done.

“Efforts will continue to bring back ancient artifacts found in the hands of institutions worldwide.”

Africa wants everything back—not on loan, not temporarily—but permanently returned.
